Tail Pocket infections and tail amputation

Our 5 year old male English Bulldog has an extremely tight tail Pocket. We've managed to keep it clean and avoid infections until the last few months. He has now become increasingly agitated and bites when we try to clean it (it's quite painful for him to have it cleaned). Our vet is happy to clean it as often as we want, but has recommended a tail amputation for his comfort and to end the cycle of infections.
Does anyone have a bully that has had a tail amputation?
Any thoughts, insights or experiences would be appreciated.

i have known several people who have had it done and say its the best thing they ever did for their bullies. those really tight pockets are very hard to keep clean and with bully allergies its even harder as they change with age. is there some way the vet can show you how they clean it so you could do it at home. perhaps a spray such as duoxo ps spray might be a solution to trying to get a something in the pocket.
